Stapleford lies on the western edge of Nottinghamshire, where the county meets Derbyshire. The River Erewash and the Erewash Canal run along its western side and form a natural border line on the map. To the east, the town merges almost seamlessly into the suburbs spreading out from Nottingham.
The street pattern is a mix of Victorian terraces near the older centre and later estates spreading over gentler ground. The M1 passes close by.
