Şūrān lies in the Hama Governorate of central Syria, north of the city of Hama, on the broad agricultural plain that runs toward Idlib. From above, the town is a compact grouping of streets and low-rise blocks, set among fields whose rectangular parcels give the surrounding land a regular, patchwork texture that frames the settlement on every side.
The main north–south route linking Hama with Aleppo passes close to the town, and on a map the relationship between highway and settlement is clear: the long straight line of the road beside the looser pattern of local streets.
