Suzano belongs to the Alto Tietê, the string of municipalities east of São Paulo where the Tietê River is still young and winding. From above, the city stretches along the river and a suburban rail line that links it to the capital. Neighbourhoods spread outwards from the station area, and green, reservoir-dotted land fills the southern part of the municipality.
The map has two distinct halves. Near the centre and the rail corridor, streets form a compact, fairly regular pattern. Further out, the roads loosen into winding lanes that follow hills, small farms and water catchment areas. The suburban line to São Paulo runs as a straight thread through the centre. The densest blocks and the older commercial streets cluster around it.
Southern green belt
