Swedru, also known as Agona Swedru, is the capital of the Agona area in Ghana's Central Region, inland from the coast between Accra and Cape Coast. From above, it is a compact town with a dense commercial centre where the main roads meet. Residential neighbourhoods spread out on every side, and the edges merge into farmland and green, gently rolling land.
The town has long served as a trading centre for the surrounding farming communities, and the market district is still its heart. Streets in the older parts are tight and irregular, and those in newer areas are more spread out along roads leading to neighbouring towns. Swedru is also the traditional centre of the Agona people.
