Tahe is a county town in the Greater Khingan region of Heilongjiang, near China's northern border. It lies in a river valley surrounded by the vast forests of the Daxing'anling mountains. Winters here are long and extremely cold, and the town developed largely around forestry and the timber industry.
From above, Tahe is a compact settlement stretched along the valley floor, with a fairly regular grid of streets and a river running beside it.
