Taihe lies in the western part of Chongqing municipality, in the rounded hill country of the eastern Sichuan Basin. This is a landscape of low ridges, terraced fields and scattered farmhouses, and the town occupies a patch of gentler ground among them. On a map, its streets are short and slightly irregular, adapting to the slopes rather than imposing a strict grid.
China has several places called Taihe, and this one is a local centre for the surrounding countryside rather than a large city.
