Taourirt is in Morocco's Oriental region, on the plain between Fez and Oujda. It has long been a stop on the route from the Atlantic side of the country to the east, and its map reflects that. The main road and the railway both pass through, and the town grew around the point where they cross.
The Oued Za, a river that flows down from the highlands to the south, runs near the town, and its valley brings a line of green into otherwise dry country. The older quarters are tightly packed, with short, irregular lanes. Newer districts are laid out on straighter, wider streets that stretch out across the plain.
