Tartu grew up where the Emajõgi River bends through southeastern Estonia, and the river still divides the map in two. On the west bank, the old town rises from the square in front of the town hall to Toome Hill, a wooded park crowned by the ruins of a cathedral. Around this core, lanes and wooden-house districts spread over the slopes.
The University of Tartu, founded in 1632, is one of the oldest in Northern Europe, and its buildings and students shape much of the city. Supilinn, the Soup Town, keeps a close grid of small wooden houses near the river. In 2024 Tartu was a European Capital of Culture, which brought fresh attention to its riverbanks and neighbourhoods.
