Terrassa lies in the Vallès Occidental, northwest of Barcelona, on a plain that slopes gently down from the mountains to the north. Its map is shaped by the torrents, or rieres, that have cut deep, green channels through the city, dividing it into separate districts linked by bridges. The old centre is compact, and around it the nineteenth-century and newer neighbourhoods spread outward in grids.
During the industrial revolution Terrassa became one of Catalonia's leading wool textile centres, and many modernist factory buildings from that period survive, including the Aymerich, Amat i Jover factory, which now houses the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia. The Romanesque ensemble of the Seu d'Ègara churches has roots dating back to the early Christian era.
