Thembisa, often spelled Tembisa, is one of the largest townships in South Africa. It lies in the city of Ekurhuleni in Gauteng, between Johannesburg and Pretoria, and was established in the late 1950s. Its name is usually translated as promise or hope. From above, it is a dense, even mesh of small streets and plots covering the gently rolling grassland.
The township is divided into many named sections, each with its own pattern of streets, and the transitions between them are visible on the map. Larger roads run through and around the area, linking it to the nearby suburbs, industrial areas and highways. Small streams and open spaces cross the grid in places.
