Thị Trấn Phố Lu, the township of Phố Lu, lies in Lào Cai province in the mountainous north-west of Vietnam, on the floor of the Red River valley. The river and the road and rail corridor that follow it give the town a long, linear form. On a map the streets run parallel to the water, and the hills rise on both sides, leaving little room to spread.
The town sits on the railway between Hanoi and Lào Cai, a line that has linked the northern highlands with the lowlands for more than a century. It is a local centre for the surrounding communes.
