Townsville is the largest city in North Queensland, spread along the shore of Cleveland Bay. Two features dominate the map. Castle Hill, a steep granite outcrop, rises directly behind the city centre, and the Ross River winds through the suburbs to the sea. Between them lies a compact grid of streets, with the port and harbour near the river mouth.
Along the waterfront runs The Strand, a long beachside promenade with parks, pools and jetties facing the bay. Magnetic Island is a short ferry ride offshore, and its rugged outline appears on the larger maps. The city is a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, and it is also home to a major Australian Army base and a university campus.
