Trostyanets lies in the Sumy region of northeastern Ukraine, on the Boromlia river. It grew around a large eighteenth- and nineteenth-century estate, and that legacy is still visible on the map. Wide areas of parkland and woodland sit right beside the streets, so the town reads as a mix of built blocks and open green space rather than a dense core.
The Round Court, a circular eighteenth-century building, is one of the town's best-known landmarks and makes an unusual ring shape among the rectangles of the centre. The town is also home to a long-established chocolate factory. Beyond the centre, residential streets run along the river valley, and the railway passes along one side of the town.
A Trostyanets map poster has taken on extra meaning since 2022, when the town was occupied for about a month in the early weeks of the full-scale invasion and then liberated. For many people the map is a way to hold the place as it is and as it should be.
