Tumkūr lies north-west of Bengaluru on the Deccan Plateau, in a landscape of granite hills, farmland and scattered lakes. On the map, the city centre is a tight network of older streets, surrounded by newer residential layouts. The national highway toward Pune passes along its edge, and the railway runs through the city, both drawing development outward in long lines.
The city is widely known for the Siddaganga Math, a monastery on its outskirts that has provided free education and meals to thousands of children for generations. Nearby, the hills of Devarayanadurga rise above the plain with temples on their slopes. Closer to Bengaluru, Tumkūr has also grown as an industrial and educational centre.
