Vermoim is a parish in the municipality of Maia, just north of Porto. It belongs to the continuous urban area that spreads from the city towards the airport and the northern suburbs. Its streets are mainly residential, a mixture of apartment blocks, houses with gardens and local shops, crossed by the busier roads that carry traffic into Porto.
Like much of Greater Porto, Vermoim developed quickly in the second half of the twentieth century on land that had been farms and villages. The map still shows traces of that older pattern. Winding lanes and small plots sit next to modern streets and blocks, and patches of green remain where the land has not been built on.
A Vermoim map poster captures this mixed suburban structure. Straight main roads frame the district, and irregular side streets fill the spaces between them. The result is detailed and varied, a good portrait of the kind of neighbourhood where much of northern Portugal actually lives.

Old lane patterns
Winding streets that follow former farm tracks survive among the newer blocks. They add irregular curves to the suburban plan.
Green gaps
Undeveloped plots and small green areas remain between the built-up zones. On the print they appear as open spaces within the street grid.
