Wath upon Dearne sits in the Dearne Valley in the borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire. On the map the town centre is a compact knot of older streets, with terraced rows and later housing estates spreading out around it. To the north the River Dearne winds through low ground that was once dominated by collieries and rail yards.
Coal mining shaped Wath for more than a century, and the former Manvers colliery and coking works nearby were among the largest in the area. After they closed, the land was redeveloped into business parks, a lake and new housing. The RSPB Old Moor nature reserve, just along the valley, turned former industrial ground into wetlands.
