Wollongong is shaped by two walls. To the west the Illawarra Escarpment rises steeply, dark with forest, and to the east the Pacific Ocean runs along a chain of beaches and rocky points. The city fills the narrow coastal plain between them, a ribbon of suburbs stretching north and south of the central business district, held together by the railway and the main coastal road.
The centre sits near a small harbour and headland, where lighthouses stand above Flagstaff Point.
