Wugang lies in the south-west of Hunan province, administered as a county-level city within Shaoyang. The urban area occupies low ground among hills, with a compact older centre surrounded by the broader, straighter avenues of recent expansion. Farmland and villages fill the gaps between the hills around the edges, so the built-up area has a clear, contained outline on the map.
Wugang has served as a regional administrative seat for many centuries, and parts of its old city wall still stand near the centre. Across Hunan the name is also familiar from food: Wugang is known for its braised dishes, sold in shops and markets well beyond the city.
