Yate lies in South Gloucestershire, north-east of Bristol, close to the older market town of Chipping Sodbury. Originally a village, it grew rapidly after the Second World War, and its map reflects that growth: residential estates arranged in loops and cul-de-sacs, with a large shopping centre and main roads at the heart of the town.
The railway line between Bristol and Gloucester runs through Yate, and the station reopened in 1989, drawing a straight line through the curved streets of the estates. Around the town, fields and the lower slopes of the Cotswold edge begin, making Yate a clearly defined shape on the map.
