Yushu Map Poster & Print

Yushu, known in Tibetan as Jyekundo, lies in the south of Qinghai Province at well over 3,500 metres above sea level. On a map the town follows the floor of a narrow valley where rivers meet, with streets extending along the water and steep slopes pressing in on both sides. The shape of the built-up area is long and branching, dictated entirely by the terrain.

In April 2010 a powerful earthquake destroyed much of the town, and it was rebuilt over the following years with new streets, squares and housing. Near the town lies the Gyanak Mani, a vast pile of carved mani stones that is considered one of the largest in the Tibetan world and draws pilgrims throughout the year.

A Yushu map poster reflects the drama of the setting: a thin ribbon of town in a deep valley, surrounded by blank, steep ground. In black and white the contrast between the dense valley streets and the empty mountains is strong, making the print feel both spare and powerful.

01

Valley town

The built-up area stretches along the narrow valley floor, forming a long, branching shape that follows the rivers and the foot of the slopes.

02

River confluence

Rivers meet near the centre of town, their lines giving the map a natural structure around which the streets are arranged.

03

Rebuilt districts

After the 2010 earthquake many areas were laid out again, so newer, more regular streets appear alongside the older lanes.
