Zvenyhorodka lies in Cherkasy region, in the gently rolling farmland of central Ukraine. The Hnylyi Tikych river runs through the town, and its winding course sets the direction of the streets on either side. The centre gathers near the water, and quieter residential streets with long garden plots spread outwards before giving way to open fields.
The town is best known for its link to Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine's national poet. He was born in the village of Moryntsi, in the Zvenyhorodka district. For many Ukrainians the name of the town immediately calls up that literary heritage, and the countryside around it is often called Shevchenko's land.
