Irrigation grid
Canals and field boundaries run for long distances in straight lines. Around the town they form a repeating pattern that fills much of the frame.

‘Afak Map Poster & Print
‘Afak is a town in Al-Qadisiyah Governorate in central Iraq, on the low, level land between the Tigris and the Euphrates. From above, the landscape is mostly geometry. Straight canals and drainage ditches divide the ground into long rectangles of farmland, and the town sits among them as a denser knot of streets.
The area has a very long past. The ruins of Nippur, one of the most important religious centres of ancient Sumer, lie close to ‘Afak, and archaeologists have excavated there for more than a century. The modern town and the ancient mound share a plain that people have been irrigating for thousands of years.
A ‘Afak map poster shows this contrast between the rigid lines of the irrigated fields and the tighter, less regular blocks of the town. In monochrome, the canals look almost like ruled lines on paper. With no relief to break the pattern, the drawing is flat, orderly and quiet.

Near ancient Nippur
The archaeological site of Nippur is close by. It connects this modest town to one of the oldest continuously studied landscapes in the world.
Level ground
There are no hills or slopes, so every road and channel keeps its direction. That makes the map unusually clean and legible.

Mapa ida ho signifikadu
A map of ‘Afak suits someone with family roots in Al-Qadisiyah, or anyone who is drawn to the landscape around ancient Mesopotamia. The straight lines of the irrigated plain turn into an almost abstract composition that works well on a plain wall.
Add a personal title and subtitle, and keep or edit the coordinates line. Then pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper and Sand feel warmer, and Blueprint leans toward technical drawing.
