Ar Ruţbah Map Poster & Print
Ar Ruţbah lies in the far west of Iraq, in the Anbar desert, on the main road corridor that links Baghdad with the borders of Jordan and Syria. From above, the town is a compact, fairly regular grid surrounded by vast, empty plateau. Roads approach in long straight lines from several directions, and the built-up area ends abruptly where the desert begins.
For much of the twentieth century Ar Ruţbah served as a waypoint on the overland route across the Syrian Desert, a place where travellers and convoys between Baghdad and the Mediterranean stopped for water and rest. That role as a stopping point still defines its layout, with the highway and its approaches forming the town's main lines.
An Ar Ruţbah map poster is a study in contrast. A dense block of streets sits in the middle of the frame, while the rest of the paper is almost blank, crossed only by highways and dry watercourses called wadis. It is a stark, minimal composition that speaks of distance and of the importance of a single inhabited point in a very large landscape.

Highway approaches
Long straight roads arrive from east and west, following the historic desert corridor between Baghdad and the borders, and cross the poster like measuring lines.
Wadis
Shallow dry valleys meander across the plateau near town, appearing as faint branching lines in an otherwise empty field.
