Balbala Map Poster & Print
Balbala lies on the western side of Djibouti City, across the wide, usually dry bed of the Oued Ambouli. On a map it looks very different from the capital's planned colonial core: a dense field of small blocks and narrow lanes spreading over flat, arid ground, with a handful of main roads cutting through and the land thinning out into open desert toward the west.
The area began as settlements beyond the city's old limits and grew quickly in the late twentieth century, taking in many newcomers from the countryside and neighbouring countries. Today it houses a large share of the country's population, and its streets have gradually been formalised with new roads, schools and public buildings, while the overall pattern remains closely packed.
A Balbala map poster records a place that is usually missing from travel maps but central to daily life in Djibouti. The tight grain of the streets gives the print a rich, textured surface, and the wadi and desert edges add clear open shapes. It is an honest, unembellished portrait of a city built largely by its residents.

Dense street grain
Small plots and narrow lanes create a fine, closely woven pattern across most of Balbala, which reads as an intricate texture when drawn in black and white.
Desert edge
To the west and south the neighbourhoods give way to bare, open ground, so the city's outline ends softly rather than at a hard boundary.

Tanba sa Balbala
Mapa ida ho signifikadu
For people from Balbala, including many in the diaspora, a map of its lanes is a statement of belonging to a neighbourhood that is often overlooked. It also suits anyone interested in how cities grow informally and then settle into permanence.
