Rio Balsas
The river winds through the town centre, with bridges crossing it and older streets close to its banks. It is the natural spine of the map.

Balsas Map Poster & Print
Balsas lies in the south of Maranhão state in north-eastern Brazil, on the river of the same name, a tributary of the Parnaíba. On the map, the Rio Balsas curves through the town, with bridges and the older quarters near its banks. Newer neighbourhoods spread out in wide grids on the higher ground.
Over recent decades Balsas has become one of the main centres of Brazil's agricultural frontier in the cerrado. The land around the town shows this clearly: huge rectangular fields of soy and other crops, separated by long straight roads. Strips of native vegetation follow the watercourses.
The town is also an entry point to the plateaus and waterfalls of southern Maranhão. A Balsas map poster shows a river town gradually taken over by the geometry of large-scale farming, and a place that has grown quickly.

Expanding grids
Newer neighbourhoods are laid out in broad, regular grids that extend steadily from the old core across the flatter surrounding land.
Frontier farmland
Vast rectangular fields and straight roads cover the landscape around the town. On a monochrome print they form a bold, graphic border.

Tanba sa Balsas
Mapa ida ho signifikadu
Balsas has grown fast, and many people living there came from elsewhere to build a life. A map pins down the town they helped shape: the river, the neighbourhood, the road out to the fields.
Choose your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, in Portuguese if you like, and pick one of five styles. Sand suits the cerrado landscape, and Classic black & white keeps the grids crisp.
