Barcelos lies on the Rio Negro in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, far upriver from Manaus. The town is a narrow strip of streets running parallel to the riverbank, with the forest close behind it. On a map the river dominates everything. It is a vast dark band that makes the settlement look like a thin line drawn along its shore.
Near the town the Rio Negro spreads out into the Mariuá archipelago, often counted among the largest river archipelagos in the world, a maze of islands and channels.
