The canal runs as a sharp, straight line across the north of the city. Its harbours and locks once served the coal trade.

Herne Map Poster & Print
Herne lies in the middle of the Ruhr, and on the map it is almost impossible to say where it ends and Bochum, Gelsenkirchen or Castrop-Rauxel begin. The city is a patchwork of former mining communities joined by roads and railways. It has two focal points: the old centre of Herne and the separate core of Wanne-Eickel, which merged with it in 1975.
The Rhine–Herne Canal cuts across the northern part of the city in a straight east–west line. It runs parallel to the Emscher, a river that served as an open sewer for decades and has since been restored. Motorways cross the area too. Around them, the map fills with former colliery sites turned into parks, trading estates and allotment gardens.
Every August, the Crange district hosts the Cranger Kirmes beside the canal, one of the largest funfairs in Germany. Close to the centre, the moated Schloss Strünkede adds a small area of water and parkland. A Herne map poster captures the typical Ruhr pattern of dense, overlapping settlement shaped by industry, water and transport.

Twin centres
Herne and Wanne-Eickel each keep their own dense core. The map shows two clusters of streets joined by a looser band of housing and industry.
Schloss Strünkede
A moated castle set in parkland. On the poster it appears as a small island of water and greenery among the surrounding residential streets.

Mapa ida ho signifikadu
In the Ruhr, people often tie their identity to a specific town or even a single colliery neighbourhood, and Herne is no exception. A map of the city shows exactly where home is, including the canal and the districts that outsiders tend to lump together.
You can use a district name as the title, a date as the subtitle and edit the coordinates line, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. It comes as $9 HD files or as a printed poster shipped from a nearby print partner.
