Jacmel Bay
The bay curves broadly along the town's southern side. On the poster it forms a calm open field of water, bounded by a clean, sweeping shoreline.

Jacmel Map Poster & Print
Jacmel faces the Caribbean on Haiti's southern coast, across the mountains from Port-au-Prince. The map is defined by its bay, a broad curve of shoreline with the town set on its northern side. Streets run up from the waterfront onto rising ground, and the hills behind the town close off the view inland. That combination of sea, slope and street gives Jacmel a clear, compact shape.
The town grew as a trading port in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Its historic centre is known for merchant houses with wrought-iron balconies and has been placed on UNESCO's tentative list. Jacmel is also celebrated for its carnival and for the papier-mâché masks and figures made by local artists, a craft that has made the town a cultural reference across Haiti.
A Jacmel map poster pairs the long, smooth line of the bay with the tighter streets of the old town above it. It is a composition with a strong horizon: open water across the bottom and a dense built edge. Beyond that, the softer ground rises into the hills.

Historic centre
The old commercial quarter near the waterfront has the densest street pattern in town. It is the area associated with the balconied merchant houses that give Jacmel its reputation.
Hills behind town
The ground climbs quickly north of the centre, and the roads bend to follow it. The softening of the street pattern marks where town gives way to the southern hills.
