Janakpur Map Poster & Print
Janakpur lies in the flat Terai of south-eastern Nepal, close to the Indian border, and on a map its most distinctive feature is water. Numerous ponds and tanks, many of them sacred, are scattered through the city, creating a pattern of rectangular and irregular shapes among the streets. The old centre forms a dense network of lanes around the main temples.
The city is traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Sita, and the Janaki Mandir, a large white temple built in the early twentieth century, stands at its heart. Janakpur is also the cultural centre of the Mithila region, known for its painting tradition, and a railway line connects it with Jaynagar across the border.
A Janakpur map poster shows a city shaped by devotion and water: the temple core, the constellation of ponds and the streets threading between them. In black and white, the ponds become clean shapes set within the fine lines of the city, making a quiet, contemplative composition.
