Komoro Map Poster & Print
Komoro lies in eastern Nagano Prefecture on the southwest slopes of Mount Asama, one of Japan's most active volcanoes. The town rises on a gradual incline above the Chikuma River, and from above its streets run in long lines up and down the slope, with the river valley cutting a deep curve along the southern side.
The historic core is built around the grounds of Komoro Castle, now Kaikoen Park. The castle is unusual for being located below the town rather than above it, on ground that drops toward the river. The writer Shimazaki Tōson lived and taught here, and his lines about Komoro and the Chikuma River are well known in Japan.
A Komoro map poster shows the town's relationship with its terrain: the old streets near the station and castle park, the roads climbing toward the volcano, and the river curving below. Even without contour lines, the direction of the streets reveals the slope.

Chikuma River valley
The river runs along the town's southern edge in a deep bend, drawing a strong natural curve across the bottom of the map.
Slopes of Mount Asama
Roads extend north and uphill toward the volcano, becoming sparser as farmland and forest take over the higher ground.
