The peninsula grid
The central streets form a tidy rectangular pattern across the headland, bounded by water on both sides. It is a compact, clearly defined city core.

Luleå Map Poster & Print
Luleå sits on a peninsula at the mouth of the Lule River on the Gulf of Bothnia, and on a map water surrounds it on nearly every side. The centre is a regular grid of blocks on the narrow headland. Bridges reach out to islands and suburbs, and harbours and bays push into the built-up area.
The town was moved to its present site in 1649, because the land, still rising after the last Ice Age, was leaving the original harbour stranded. The old settlement, Gammelstad, survives upriver as a UNESCO-listed church town. More than four hundred small wooden cottages cluster there around a medieval stone church.
Offshore lies the Luleå archipelago, with more than a thousand islands, and in winter the frozen sea carries marked ice roads. The large steelworks and the port complete the picture of an industrial northern city. A Luleå map poster captures the grid, the water and the scatter of islands that define it.

Gammelstad
The old church town upriver keeps its irregular plan of small cottage plots around the church. It contrasts quietly with the planned grid of the modern centre.
The archipelago
Islands of every size spread across the sea to the south and east. In black and white they appear as a loose scatter of shapes around the city.
