Central grid
The town centre is laid out in regular blocks around a main square, like many towns on Colombia's Caribbean side. The pattern reads clearly at any poster size.

Mahates Map Poster & Print
Mahates is a town and municipality in the Colombian department of Bolívar, in the flat Caribbean lowlands inland from Cartagena. The town itself is a modest grid of blocks around a central square, and its streets fade quickly into open pasture and farmland. Across the wider municipality the land is low and wet in places, and marshes and channels show as scattered pale shapes on the map.
To the south, the municipality reaches the Canal del Dique, the long waterway that links the Magdalena River with the Bay of Cartagena. Mahates also includes San Basilio de Palenque, a village founded by people who escaped slavery and recognised by UNESCO for its language, music and traditions. Many visitors pass through Mahates on the way there.
A Mahates map poster shows a small town in a large, watery landscape. The regular blocks of the centre sit against the uneven outlines of marshes and farm tracks. At a wider scale, the canal adds a long, deliberate line. It is a fitting map for families from the area and for anyone who has made the trip to Palenque.

Canal del Dique
The historic waterway from the Magdalena River to Cartagena runs through the municipality. At wider map scales it appears as a long, steady line across the lowlands.
Wetlands and pasture
Marshes, ponds and grazing land around the town create a loose, irregular texture. It contrasts with the straight streets of the centre.
