The main village follows the shore at the foot of Mount Duff, where a small set of lanes makes up almost all of the island's street network.

Mangareva Map Poster & Print
Mangareva is the largest island of the Gambier group in French Polynesia, far to the southeast of Tahiti. It is a steep, curved ridge of volcanic land, with Mount Duff rising above the main village of Rikitea. The island sits within a broad lagoon shared with several smaller high islands, the whole group enclosed by a barrier reef that appears on a map as a thin, broken ring.
Rikitea holds nearly all of the island's streets, a short strip of lanes along the shore below the mountain. Its best-known building is the Cathedral of Saint Michael, built by Catholic missionaries in the nineteenth century and decorated with mother-of-pearl. Today the lagoon is known for black pearl farming, and its calm water supports much of the island's life.
A Mangareva map poster is one of the more unusual compositions in the collection: a slender curve of land, a cluster of companion islands and a great deal of lagoon, all held within a faint line of reef. The balance of mass and space is striking in monochrome and works particularly well at larger sizes, where the reef stays legible.

Gambier lagoon
A wide lagoon surrounds Mangareva and its neighbouring islands, giving the map a large, calm field of water within which the island's crescent is set.
Barrier reef ring
A reef encircles the group at a distance, drawn as a thin, interrupted line that frames the composition and marks the edge of the open ocean.

Mangareva is remote enough that most people who hang it have a real tie to it: family, a posting, a long sailing passage or a once-in-a-lifetime visit. Its crescent inside a ring of reef is also simply a beautiful shape.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a name, a boat or the date of arrival. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand; Noir turns the lagoon into deep shadow, while Paper and Sand keep it light and open.
