Merelani lies on the dry plains between Arusha and Moshi, not far from Kilimanjaro International Airport, and its name is known well beyond Tanzania. The Merelani Hills just nearby are the only place in the world where tanzanite, a blue-violet gemstone, is mined commercially.
The map reflects that economy. The town is a loose spread of streets and plots that grew quickly around the mining area, with tracks leading out toward the hills and the mining zone. Beyond them lie open savannah and scattered homesteads, crossed by only a few longer roads.
