Mount Isa Map Poster & Print
Mount Isa is a mining city in northwest Queensland, far from the coast in the red country of the outback. On a map, the city is divided by the Leichhardt River, usually a dry sandy bed that fills in the wet season. Residential streets spread on both banks, and the main commercial area sits on the eastern side.
Directly west of the river lies the mine, one of the most productive in the world for lead, silver, copper and zinc. Its large industrial area, with pits, plant and tailings, makes a striking contrast to the regular suburban streets. The tall stacks rise above the city and are visible for miles.
Mount Isa hosts one of the largest rodeos in the Southern Hemisphere each year, and the city is known for bringing together workers from many countries. A Mount Isa map poster shows a city carved from the outback, with river and mine setting its shape.

The mine
The mining lease beside the city covers a vast industrial area, its roads and pits creating shapes quite unlike the residential grid.
Suburban grid
Residential streets on both sides of the river form regular blocks, a tidy pattern set against the open outback terrain.
