Pontoise Map Poster & Print
Pontoise stands on a bluff above the Oise, northwest of Paris. The old town occupies the high ground, and on a map its narrow, irregular streets contrast sharply with the straight river and the flat land along the banks below. Bridges cross the Oise at the foot of the town, which takes its name from an ancient crossing point.
The Cathedral of Saint-Maclou sits at the centre of the historic quarter, and the lanes around it keep a medieval pattern. In the nineteenth century the painter Camille Pissarro lived and worked here for many years, and Pontoise and its surroundings appear in many of his canvases. Today the town forms part of the Cergy-Pontoise new town, whose planned districts extend to the west.
A Pontoise map poster shows the layering of history. A medieval core sits on its hill, the river curves below, and the modern new town spreads out beyond. It makes a rich, detailed image for anyone who knows the Val-d'Oise.

Hilltop old town
The medieval quarter climbs from the river in tight, winding lanes gathered around the cathedral on the high ground.
New town edge
To the west, the planned districts of Cergy-Pontoise introduce broader roads and larger blocks, clearly different from the historic core.
