Planned street grid
The central streets cross at right angles and form regular blocks. This sets the old princely capital apart from the irregular pattern of most towns in the region.

Pudukkottai Map Poster & Print
Pudukkottai is a town in central Tamil Nadu that was once the capital of a princely state ruled by the Thondaiman dynasty. It has a reputation as one of the better planned towns in the region. On a map, the centre shows a regular pattern of streets crossing at right angles, which is unusual among the winding towns of South India.
Around the town, the dry plain is dotted with tanks, the traditional reservoirs built to store monsoon rain. They appear as rounded or irregular shapes with embankments on one side and fields spread below them. Roads leave the town towards Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur and the coast. The Sittanavasal rock-cut cave, known for its old paintings, is not far from the town.
A Pudukkottai map poster draws attention to that contrast: an ordered grid at the centre, surrounded by the looser forms of water tanks, fields and village roads. It works almost like a diagram of deliberate planning in a landscape shaped by water. The result is balanced and graphic, with more structure than many maps of towns this size.

Irrigation tanks
Many reservoirs surround the town. They show up as smooth pale shapes held in by embankments, spread across the plain between roads and villages.
Radiating highways
Main roads leave the centre towards Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur and the coast. They are long, straight lines that link the grid to the wider region.
