Saint Peter Port Map Poster & Print
Saint Peter Port rises from its harbour on the east coast of Guernsey, facing the nearby islands of Herm and Sark across a narrow channel. On a map the town looks layered. A dense cluster of narrow streets and stepped lanes sits near the water. Above it, wider roads and houses spread uphill toward the plateau that covers much of the island.
The harbour is the strongest form in the drawing, enclosed by long piers and breakwaters with marinas tucked inside. At the end of one breakwater, Castle Cornet occupies a rocky islet that was once cut off from the shore. The Town Church stands by the old quays on the waterfront, and steep lanes rise behind it into the upper town.
Victor Hugo spent fifteen years in exile here and finished Les Misérables at Hauteville House, which still overlooks the harbour. A Saint Peter Port map poster captures the town's intricate pattern of lanes, steps and harbour walls, shaped by centuries of seafaring. It is a finely detailed drawing that rewards close inspection.

Castle Cornet
The castle sits on a rocky islet at the end of a breakwater. Its compact fortified shape projects into the sea from the harbour.
Stepped lanes
Narrow streets and flights of steps climb from the waterfront to the upper town. They create a fine, tangled texture quite unlike a planned grid.

Guernsey families, islanders who moved to the mainland and readers who know the town as Hugo's place of exile often hang Saint Peter Port as a keepsake. The intricate lanes and the clean lines of the harbour work especially well at larger sizes.
