Sumedang lies in the hills of West Java, east of Bandung, on land that rises towards the volcanic cone of Mount Tampomas. The town was once the seat of the Sumedang Larang kingdom, and its centre still holds the regency's historic core. One of those roads has a particular story. The Cadas Pangeran pass, cut through rock in the early nineteenth century as part of the Great Post Road across Java, winds along the slopes near the town. Sumedang is also known across Indonesia for its tofu, sold at stalls throughout the region.
