Salt lake
The salt lake stretches along the south side of the city, divided into ponds and channels that form a striking pattern of rectangles and bands.

Yuncheng Map Poster & Print
Yuncheng lies in the far south-west of Shanxi, in a basin near the great bend of the Yellow River. Just south of the city is its most unusual feature, a long, shallow salt lake. Its evaporation ponds show from above as a patchwork of rectangles, and beyond it the Zhongtiao Mountains rise as a long ridge along the southern horizon.
Salt has been harvested here for thousands of years and was an important source of revenue for early Chinese states. The Yuncheng area is also the traditional home of Guan Yu, the Three Kingdoms general later honoured as a deity. The large Guandi Temple at Xiezhou, near the city, is one of the most important temples dedicated to him.
A Yuncheng map poster pairs a regular modern street grid with the geometric pattern of the salt lake. Mountains close off the southern edge, and open farmland spreads around the rest. It is a distinctive composition, and few cities have a feature quite like the lake.

Zhongtiao ridge
The Zhongtiao Mountains run parallel to the lake and city, forming a clear southern boundary that separates the basin from the Yellow River valley.
Basin grid
On level basin ground, Yuncheng's streets form a largely regular grid of broad avenues, which contrasts well with the lake's textured surface.
