Bareta is a town in Mansa district in southern Punjab, on the broad, level plain of the Malwa region. The land here is almost perfectly flat and intensively farmed, and the map shows it. Around the town, rural roads run for long distances in straight lines, dividing the land into big rectangles of wheat and cotton country.
The town itself is denser and less regular than the fields around it. Lanes bend and branch around older neighbourhoods, while newer streets on the outskirts follow the straighter lines of the farm roads. In black and white, this contrast between a close-knit core and a wide, ruled landscape gives the design most of its character.
