Bethany sits in Washington County on the western side of the Portland metropolitan area, and its map looks unmistakably like the late twentieth century. Instead of a grid, the streets loop and curl into cul-de-sacs, crescents and gently bending collectors, with small parks and stream corridors threaded between neighbourhoods. The pattern is soft and organic, almost like a leaf's veins.
Much of the community grew up in recent decades, as the metro area pushed outward from the hills west of the city. To the north and west the density falls away quickly, and the suburban lines give way to the wide field geometry of farmland, which makes the edge of Bethany clearly visible from above.
