Danvers sits a few miles inland from Salem on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Three short tidal rivers, the Waters, the Crane and the Porter, reach in from the coast and split the town into uneven lobes. From above, their marshy channels show up as fine branching lines. They cut through a layout of old country roads, later cul-de-sacs and the wide interchanges where Route 1, Interstate 95 and Route 128 meet.

Until the eighteenth century this was Salem Village, and the accusations that led to the witch trials of 1692 began here. The Rebecca Nurse Homestead still stands among the suburban lots. To the north, Hathorne Hill rises as a clear rounded shape. It once held the Danvers State Hospital, whose Kirkbride building was largely replaced by housing, though its outline remains part of the town's story.
