Ely stands on what was once an island of higher ground in the Cambridgeshire Fens, surrounded by marsh until the land was drained in the seventeenth century. The name Isle of Ely still reflects that past. Above everything rises the cathedral with its octagonal lantern tower. It can be seen for miles across the flat landscape and has long been known as the Ship of the Fens.
On a map, the historic centre gathers around the cathedral precinct, with a compact market area and narrow streets sloping down to the River Great Ouse on the east side of town. The river, with its moorings and waterside paths, forms a gentle curve against the newer residential areas that spread outward. Railway lines converge south of the centre, making Ely a notable junction.
Oliver Cromwell lived here for about a decade, and his house near the cathedral is now open to visitors.
