Hook sits where the outer suburbs of south-west London start to loosen into fields. On a map it reads as a dense layer of curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs, the kind laid out as London spread outward along its main roads in the twentieth century. Nothing is arranged on a grid. Crescents, closes and avenues fold into one another, and schools, playing fields and small parades of shops sit between them.

The strongest line on the map is the A3 trunk road, which cuts through Hook on its way between London and the south coast. Its broad junctions and slip roads stand out against the fine suburban streets around it. A north–south road crosses it, and the neighbourhood is organised around that meeting of routes, with Surbiton and Kingston to the north and Chessington to the south.

A Hook map poster captures that familiar pattern of outer London: close-set housing, a major road cutting through it, and green space opening up at the edges. The shapes are modest, but they are very specific to the place. Anyone who has walked to school here, driven the A3 each day or lived in one of these closes will recognise where they are straight away.
