Hounslow grew as a staging post on the roads leading west out of London, and the map still shows it. The High Street follows the old Bath Road, the Great West Road cuts a straighter line to the north, and the Piccadilly line links the town through stations that carry its name. Around these lines, Victorian and interwar terraces fill the blocks in tight, regular rows.

To the south-west lies Hounslow Heath, what remains of the open land once feared for its highwaymen. In 1784 General William Roy measured a baseline across the heath, and it became the starting point for the triangulation of Great Britain, the survey from which the Ordnance Survey grew. Few places have such a direct link to the history of map-making.

Further west the geometry changes abruptly. Heathrow's parallel runways and terminal loops appear as long, clean shapes against the suburban grain, while the River Crane and the Duke of Northumberland's River wind through strips of parkland between the houses.
