Independence Map Poster
Independence sits just east of Kansas City, and its map is organised around one clear point: Independence Square, with the historic Jackson County courthouse at its centre. Streets radiate outward in a regular grid that becomes looser suburban development toward the south and east. To the north, the Missouri River forms a natural boundary.
In the nineteenth century the town was a starting point for the Santa Fe, Oregon and California trails, which is reflected today in the National Frontier Trails Museum. It is also closely tied to Harry S. Truman, who lived here and whose presidential library is in the city. His home on North Delaware Street is preserved as a historic site.
An Independence map poster shows a mix of old and new: the square and its close grid, the leafy residential streets around the Truman neighbourhood and the major roads leading toward Kansas City. The river gives the top of the map a smooth curve, balancing the straight lines below it.
