Olathe is the county seat of Johnson County, on the southwestern side of the Kansas City metropolitan area. From above it follows a classic Midwestern pattern. A mile grid of arterial roads lies over gently rolling prairie, and each square is filled with curving residential streets, cul-de-sacs and green spaces. Interstate 35 cuts through the grid on a long diagonal, the one bold line that breaks the order.
The town grew up in the mid-nineteenth century along the westward trails. The Santa Fe, Oregon and California trails all passed through the area, and the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop still recalls that era. Today Olathe is one of the larger cities in Kansas, with a historic downtown around the county courthouse.
