Košice is Slovakia's second-largest city, and its historic core is easy to pick out from above. Hlavná, the main street, widens into a long lens-shaped square that runs north to south. The cathedral, the theatre and a row of burgher houses stand along its length. Around this spine, the lines of the old fortifications survive as an oval of streets that encloses the medieval town.

Outside that oval the map changes character. Nineteenth-century blocks give way to large socialist-era housing estates laid out in curving superblocks, especially to the west and south. The Hornád River runs along the eastern side of the city, and green hills close in from the north and west. Wide boulevards and rail lines cut across the valley floor.

A Košice map poster brings these layers together: the fine medieval grain, the ring of former walls and the broad modern districts. The Cathedral of St Elisabeth, often described as the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe, stands on the main square. In 2013 the city was a European Capital of Culture, and it used the title to repurpose industrial sites for the arts.
