March Map Poster
March lies in the Fens of Cambridgeshire, and its map reflects that flat, drained landscape. The old course of the River Nene winds through the centre of the town. The older streets gather along the river, and later housing spreads outward in neat estates. All around, straight drains and field boundaries run across the reclaimed land.
The railway shaped March as much as the river did. The town grew into an important junction, and the large Whitemoor marshalling yard to the north still covers a big area on the map, with long parallel lines of track. It is one of the clearest geometric features anywhere in the Fens.
In the town, St Wendreda's Church is known for its double hammerbeam roof, carved with more than a hundred angels. A March map poster puts the town inside its wider setting. The river loop, the rail lines and the dense centre sit in a wide surrounding pattern of drained, ruler-straight fields.
